Grandest friends and kindred spirits
can make life seem a downhill ride.
As troubles weigh our hearts with worry,
We nuture friends to lift the tide.
But tragic changes bring reflection
through saddest time of painful loss,
When friends don't ask if they can go,
and leave behind both love and loss.
Reflecting treasured, shortened times
rekindles fire in lasting hearts.
Though nature's game is sometimes cruel,
and limits players to make new starts.
We try to act as if life gives
without the cost or feel of pain.
But bonds grow strong with each new link,
from dog to man... and back again.
The good ones may not seem so rare
until they find a better place -
Where all the tracks are truly fresh,
and loving bonds are full of grace.
Vaya con dios, mis amigas.
Carolyn Campbell (El Paso, Texas) and Kay Pena (Santa Fe, New Mexico) were friends of mine through the dog community. They were dedicated tracking dog trainers and kindred spirits.
